Capcom drops surprise Resident Evil 2 Remake update

The unexpected update for Resident Evil 2 comes roughly two weeks after it set a new record as the best-selling game in the franchise.

Recent history suggests that the next game to get a remake will be Resident Evil 5.

In the realm of gaming, surprises come in different forms. Sometimes it’s an unanticipated sequel to a much-loved title, other times it’s a complete overhaul of an existing title, or a nostalgic classic that nobody saw coming. Today’s surprise is from Capcom and an update for Resident Evil 2, specifically, its remake.

Just when the gaming community had their attention riveted to other latest releases, Capcom decides to take us on a blast to the past, shedding new light on an old favorite.

To give you some context, the Resident Evil 2 Remake made its debut in the early part of 2019. It was an initial part of Capcom’s recent journey to revitalize the cherished Resident Evil series. With its more recent emphasis on the remake of Resident Evil 4, which has seen a lot of traction this year, it seemed improbable for them to look back at Resident Evil 2, yet, here we are, discussing a fresh update for a game that’s been on the shelves for over four years.

Perhaps Capcom had some free time to work on Resident Evil 2 while developing the DLC for Resident Evil 4.

Now, this isn’t one of your run-of-the-mill patches that developers silently roll out years post-release under the generic tagline of “performance improvements and stability updates”. This is Capcom we’re talking about, and they’ve always had a penchant for keeping things interesting.

Available for immediate download across PlayStation, Xbox, and PC platforms, the update has piqued the curiosity of many.

For starters, it adds a new display language to the game. Given the global popularity of the Resident Evil franchise, this is a prudent move to increase the game’s accessibility across different regions. Apart from this, Capcom has also taken the initiative to rectify the descriptions of several achievements in specific languages, ensuring uniformity and clarity for its vast player base.

The original Resident Evil 2 was also considered one of the franchise’s finest outings.

Coincidentally, this update lacks clarity around the bugs and problems rectified. Capcom has ironed out some lingering issues within RE2, but what these issues specifically were remains undisclosed. Such a move leaves dedicated fans in a speculative limbo, itching to know just what this patch has truly tweaked under the hood.

But the real question in the minds of many is, why now? The release of this update is an enigma in itself. Not only did it appear out of the blue, but given Capcom’s probable concentration on recent and upcoming titles like Resident Evil 4, Street Fighter 6, and Exoprimal, the dedication to an older title like RE2 is both commendable and mysterious.

While on the subject of Resident Evil 4, it’s worth mentioning Capcom isn’t only committed to revitalizing old gems but is also actively working on the next major content update for this game. The Separate Ways is an update scheduled for a release later this year. However, typical of Capcom’s style, they’ve kept the specifics – the release date and whether it’ll be a free or paid upgrade – under wraps.

Very few iconic games can get a remake that’s as popular as the original source.

Whether this is the final hurrah for the Resident Evil 2 Remake remains to be seen. While many speculate that this might be the last update Resident Evil 2 will witness, the realm of gaming is unpredictable. Who knows? Perhaps players might discover issues that Capcom will decide to rectify in the future.

Speaking of Resident Evil, the remake of the second game in the series recently became the best-selling game in series history. Finally, Remedy Entertainment confirms Resident Evil’s influence on Alan Wake 2.
