Billboard-Sized DualSense Buster Sword Spotted in UK Ahead of FF7 Rebirth Release

Yes, you read that right, it's Cloud Strife's Buster Sword from Final Fantasy 7 but made out of DualSense controllers.

It looks like Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth's marketing is in full swing.
It looks like Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth's marketing is in full swing.

How many DualSense controllers does it take to save Gaia and the Lifestream from the evil crutches of Sephiroth? If you ask Square Enix, the answer is “65.”

As part of its latest marketing stunt for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, which comes out on the PlayStation 5 on February 29, Square Enix opted for a traditional ad route, paying for a billboard in the UK. Since this is Square we’re talking about, it couldn’t stop itself from putting a unique twist to it. Instead of a straightforward image for FF7 Rebirth, it put an appropriately-sized Buster Sword on the back of Cloud Strife. But that’s not all! Inside the sword are 65 DualSense controllers, two of which are in Cobalt Blue.

It definitely appears as if the marketing gloves are off now for Square Enix following the review embargo lifting on February 22.

Square Enix has had a reputation for over-the-top marketing stunts for Final Fantasy in recent years. Last year, it teamed up with the Tower of London and the Royal Armouries to display the sword of the Final Fantasy 16 protagonist, Clive, for an entire month. The best part is that because FF16 takes inspiration from medieval Britain, the Invictus, a Rosefield family heirloom passed down for generations, fit right in the company of weapons and armory once worn and owned by royalty.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth picks up following the events of Final Fantasy 7 Remake. Instead of taking place inside a single setting, FF7 Rebirth opens up the world, bringing back the overview map from previous entries and letting Cloud Strife and the rest of the party go ahead and explore a total of 8 different regions, including the Meridian Ocean region, where the Temple of the Ancients is located.

Judging by the critical acclaim FF7 Rebirth has received, for which the game’s director is thankful for, Square Enix might have its first legit GOTY contender in a long time.

While that remains uncertain, what’s clear is that there are already spoilers on the internet, so beware.
