Bill Murray originally had a bigger role in Quantumania

Marvel Japan released some deleted scenes for Murray’s Lord Krylar, effectively changing the entire plot of the movie.

Lord Krylar had a lot of deleted scenes in Ant-Man 3.

Many fans were surprised by the casting of Bill Murray in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. A new behind-the-scenes video from Marvel Japan reveals an expanded role for Murray’s character.

The new video was shared via Marvel Japan’s twitter account and gives fans a sneak peek at what the studio originally had planned for Lord Krylar. In the clip, Kylar is seen teaming up with Kang and MDOK which would have changed the complexity of the movie.

According to Ant-Man 3 co-star Katy O’Brien, Lord Krylar had a “whole space pursuit… and then wound up with Kang and got arrested or something.” Jentora, O’Brien’s character in the film, would end up in a jail cell with Lord Krylar. Cassie Lang, played by Kathryn Newton, had to break the pair out of the quantum prison.

The scene where Cassie frees the pair can be seen in the new clip.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania writer Jeff Loveness explains how Murray ended up as Krylar, saying that they went with one of the most obscure characters to dodge internet rumors, saying:

We never wanted anyone to guess who he was playing.

The internet’s full of all these rumors and no-one knows who he’s gonna be… We tried to find the deepest cut Marvel character we could and we found this random character from a random Hulk comic book in the Quantum Realm called Lord Krylar and we were like ‘Yeah, let’s go with that’.

One of the deleted scenes in Ant-Man 3 shows an alternate version of Kang and MODOK with Scott Lang before he went off to retrieve the multiversal core. In the scene, Krylar is seen showing an alien off a cliff.

Lord Krylar is seen throwing an alien off a cliff in one of the deleted scenes.

“There’s nobody like him,” co-star Michelle Pfeiffer said of Murray. “Not only is he one of the funniest people on the planet, but when he goes dark when he goes serious… he has some moments in this where it’s kind of a side of him I personally haven’t seen.”

It would be interesting to see a director’s cut of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Having extended scenes for Lord Krylar would have made his role more significant to the bigger story. A backstory and more character development would have gone a long way.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania ultimately underperformed at the box office. Many critics felt that the story of the third Ant-Man movie was underwhelming and incoherent. The film is one of the few MCU films that failed to break even.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is available for streaming on Disney+.
