Avengers 5 To Have A New Title, Moving On From Jonathan Majors’ Kang

With Jonathan Majors now out of the MCU, Marvel might be bringing in Doctor Doom to help fill the massive hole he left.

Following Jonathan Majors’ legal issues and his subsequent departure from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Marvel has decided to remove his character, Kang, from the title of the fifth Avengers installment, signaling a significant shift in narrative direction.

Originally titled Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, the film is undergoing rewrites to either minimize or completely remove Kang’s presence from the storyline.

Kang the Conqueror, a formidable time-traveling adversary, was first introduced as the MCU’s most imminent threat in the Loki Season 1 finale and played a pivotal role in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. These appearances were building up to what many assumed would be a showdown of epic proportions in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. However, the underperformance of Quantumania at the box office, coupled with Majors’ conviction, has prompted Marvel to rethink its strategy.

To be fair, there are worse strategies to have Deadpool & Wolverine be the lone flag bearer of the MCU this year.

A report from The Hollywood Reporter suggests that Marvel Studios is pivoting to a new but similarly iconic villain, Doctor Doom, the sovereign monarch of Latveria. The mask-wearing evil genius has been a cornerstone of Marvel’s villain roster since debuting in 1962. He could potentially offer a fresh antagonist for the Avengers to face and be a large enough of a threat to warrant a multiversal team-up.

In any case, this shift is part of a broader recalibration of the MCU’s creative direction, as Marvel seeks to refine its approach following a year marked by disappointments as it saw its first major flop, The Marvels, and a mixed reception to other releases, both in theaters and Disney+. The studio’s response involves a reduction in output and a focus on quality, as stated by Disney’s Bob Iger, emphasizing a move towards ensuring that the films being made can be even better.

With only one movie, Deadpool & Wolverine, confirmed for release this year, Disney and Marvel are taking a measured approach to its upcoming slate for the foreseeable future.

For now, audiences are left to speculate on the future of the MCU as Marvel navigates this transitional phase, aiming to recapture the magic that has made its cinematic universe a cornerstone of modern pop culture.
