If you thought that No Way Home was done setting records, then you’re wrong. Two weeks after it premiered last December 17, No Way Home just snatched another record as it became Sony Pictures’ highest-grossing film ever – with plenty of room to spare.
How much bigger can No Way Home still get?
Now running in its third weekend, No Way Home has already earned a staggering $1.16 billion at the global box office. Naturally, the numbers have slowed down quite a bit for MCU’s latest hit. After a massive opening weekend, No Way Home became the first and only Hollywood film to ever breach the $1 billion mark during the COVID-19 pandemic. Now on its third week, it has surpassed Spider-Man: Far From Home to bag top Sony Pictures’ long and storied history of filmmaking.
The previous record-holder, 2019’s Far From Home, earned $1.13 billion at the global box office. With its total, No Way Home could stand to make a couple million if not hundreds more. What’s even more impressive is that No Way Home is just the third Sony movie to earn more than $1 billion, with the other being 2012’s Skyfall.
Having said that, the thing that stands out the most about No Way Home is that it reached its global box office total without ever showing in China.
In an ideal scenario, the Chinese government would have let comic book movies like No Way Home premiere this year. Unfortunately, this isn’t the case as most superhero movies and several other Hollywood films are effectively banned from showing in Chinese theaters.
Ultimately, 2021 has been a big year for Sony as both No Way Home and Venom: Let There Be Carnage were huge box office hits despite the pandemic.
In other MCU news, fans who haven’t gotten around to watching No Way Home finally got a chance to see one of the movie’s post-credits scenes. Marvel Studios finally revealed the official trailer for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which picks up exactly where No Way Home left off. Meanwhile, there are rumors that Venom 3 will feature a highly anticipated show-off between Spider-Man and Venom.
