The Last Of Us Season 2 Filming Update Confirms The Bleak Fate of Joel Miller

It doesn't appear that the live-action adaptation has any plans on changing on one of the saddest moment in gaming history.

HBO’s The Last of Us live-action adaptation was as faithful as an adaptation can be, but it also made several changes to the original game, often to its benefit. While audiences didn’t always agree with the creative directions taken by the show, the end result was a masterpiece. However, most hoped that Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin would risk tweaking a pivotal scene in the second season that has haunted many The Last of Us fans since 2020.

Unfortunately, it appears that The Last of Us Season 2 will follow the game’s events just as closely as the first season.

According @DanielRPK, Pedro Pascal, has officially wrapped up filming scenes for The Last of Us Season 2.

It’s normal for actors to finish working ahead of their colleagues, even if they’re one of its biggest stars. The best-case scenario is HBO prioritized his scenes so he can whisk off to other commitments. Pascal has an even busier schedule now that he’s joined the MCU. But what if Miller’s scenes were shot first because they happen early on?

Those who’ve played The Last of Us Part 2 know about a pivotal scene early in the game that caught everyone off their guard in 2020.

The sequence we’re talking about is Joel Miller’s death at the hands of Abby Anderson, to be played by Kaitlyn Dever, and the rest of the Fireflies.

This moment was what set Ellie Williams, played by Bella Ramsey, on the path of blind rage and vengeance as she went on a killing spree while seeking revenge for his father figure. The cyclical nature of violence, which Miller himself started after killing Abby’s father in the closing events of The Last of Us Season 1 is a prevailing theme throughout the pair of titles.

While most expected this to happen in the live-action adaptation eventually, no one thought it would take place so soon.

The showrunners have each suggested in separate occasions that The Last of Us Part 2 will be adapted across multiple seasons, possibly even stretching to a fourth season. An argument can be made that Season 2 of The Last of Us, which is aiming to premiere in early 2025, could adapt the early goings of the game and leave Joel Miller’s capture for a cliffhanger ending. But it seems like Mazin and Druckmann have other plans.

The awards and accolades that HBO’s The Last of Us have received should silence all the naysayers for now although that doesn’t make the impending death less impactful.

Speaking of The Last of Us, the remaster on the PlayStation 5, The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered, will reportedly be headed to the PC sometime later this year.
