Madame Web was far from Sydney Sweeney’s breakout role, but she’s arguably the only one walking away from the disastrous film with her reputation intact. Fans want to see more of her after her starring role as Julia Cornwall, based on the comic book character, Julia Carpenter.
The global box office take and critical reception of Madame Web might have killed any chances for a sequel but it could pave the way for Sweeney to crossover to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
As a matter of fact, Sweeney herself wants this to happen, confirming her interest in a potential role in a future Spider-Man film alongside Zendaya.

In an exclusive interview with ComicBook.com, Sweeney revealed that it would be “so cool” to star with Zendaya in the MCU.
Even before Madame Web, Sweeney, known for her compelling performance and rapid Hollywood rise following how breakout role in Euphoria, has been a part of plenty fan discussions about her potential role in future Marvel projects. Fans have long lobbied for her to join as either Spider-Gwen or Black Cat, with some even creating fan art of her in said roles.
Madame Web, while a departure from the central Spider-Man narrative, has opened up new avenues for character crossovers within the Sony and Marvel shared universe. This universe, already home to iconic characters such as Venom, Morbius, and Kraven the Hunter, now has a way potentially welcome Sweeney’s character into the fold of Spider-Man’s allies or adversaries. Despite its complexities, these characters could intersect in future storylines.
Sweeney’s expressed desire to work alongside Zendaya, her co-star in Euphoria who is currently portraying MJ (Michelle Jones, not Mary Jane) in the MCU’s Spider-Man films, offers an intriguing prospect for the narrative and the chemistry between characters. Zendaya’s MJ, alongside Tom Holland’s Peter Parker, has become a cornerstone of the recent Spider-Man films. The inclusion of Sweeney could introduce new layers to the story and relationships within the universe.
After all, there must exist a parallel universe out there where Sweeney’s version of Gwen Stacy is more than just a girl that’s introduced to the story to be two things: to be pretty and to die a tragic death.
Ultimately, Sweeney has proven her ability to navigate roles across multiple genres. Her performances have garnered critical acclaim and a dedicated fanbase, both of which are good for the struggling MCU. If that isn’t enough, Sweeney even has the gamers on her side after revealing one of her favourite games growing up.
As the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Sony’s Spider-Man Universe continue to expand and intersect, the possibility of seeing Sweeney alongside Zendaya in a Spider-Man film will remain an exciting prospect for fans for the foreseeable future.
Unfortunately, with Sony and Disney currently entangled in a web of negotiations, it might be a while until we see the next Spider-Man film hit the big screen.
