The Minions are back, and this time they’re taking on the world of artificial intelligence – one image at a time.
During Super Bowl LVIII, Universal Pictures unveiled a new trailer for Despicable Me 4, and instead of focusing on the movie’s plot, it cleverly mocked the often bizarre and nonsensical results of AI-generated images.
The trailer opens with a voiceover by Jon Hamm, praising the power and potential of AI. As he speaks, viewers are bombarded with strange images: women with extra limbs doing yoga, friends chowing down on raw spaghetti, and even a bizarre portrait of Steve Carell and Will Ferrell in royal attire. The implication is clear: AI is changing the world, but not necessarily in a good way.
But then the trailer takes a surprising if hilarious turn. The camera zooms out to reveal where the bizarre images are coming from. Inside a massive room, hundreds of mischievous minute Minions gleefully manipulate photo editing software to create the funniest and most nonsensical images possible.
While AI has made significant strides in image generation, the results can often be uncanny and unsettling. The Minions, known for their chaotic antics, serve as a perfect metaphor for the unpredictable and sometimes nonsensical nature of AI’s creative output.
Of course, the trailer also serves its primary purpose: promoting Despicable Me 4. Although the plot details remain a mystery, we see Gru and his family face new challenges, including a new nemesis voiced by Will Ferrell. The trailer also introduces Gru Jr., Gru’s new son who seems intent on making his father’s life miserable.

With its humor, heart, and unexpected twist, the Despicable Me 4 Super Bowl trailer successfully captured viewers’ attention. It cleverly poked fun at a current trend, provided a glimpse into the upcoming movie, and left fans eager to see more of Gru, his family, and of course, the Minions in their latest adventure.
As we count the days until Despicable Me 4 premieres in theaters on July 3, you might want to make sure that you have the right amount of fingers.
