Disney fans, get ready to take to the seas once more with Moana and because Moana 2 is on the horizon.
The sequel to the 2016 hit animated film, Moana, is making a splash in theaters later this year on November 27.
This announcement came directly from Bob Iger, the CEO of Disney, signaling a significant development for the beloved franchise.
Originally conceived as a TV series, the project eventually evolved into a feature film due to the impressive quality of the footage, convincing Disney executives that a theatrical release was necessary. Although we can’t help but think that this has more to do with Disney and its recent decision to focus more heavily on quality over quantity.
Either way, this all but confirms that Moana 2 isn’t just a cash grab – it’s a genuine attempt to make a sequel to one of the most beloved animated films of the past decade.
As for the film itself, Moana 2 promises an expansive new voyage that takes Moana and his demi-god protector, Maui, into uncharted territories. After receiving a mysterious call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana embarks on an adventure through the far seas of Oceania, navigating dangerous and long-lost waters. The journey is unlike anything Moana has faced in the past, setting the stage for a thrilling and heartfelt exploration of heritage, courage, and discovery.
The sequel will be directed by Dave Derrick Jr., who has previously contributed his talents to other Disney films like Strange World and the first film. The musical score, a pivotal element of the first film’s success, will see the return of Opetaia Foa’i and Mark Mancina, alongside newcomers Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear. This blend of new and returning talent ensures that the sequel will honor the spirit of the original while introducing fresh elements to the franchise.
Unfortunately, Lin-Manuel Miranda, who penned iconic songs like How Far I’ll Go and You’re Welcome for the first film, is not expected to return for the sequel. Despite his absence, the inclusion of Grammy winners Barlow and Bear, known for their Unofficial Bridgerton Musical, signals an exciting new direction for the film’s music.
The original Moana movie was a box office triumph, grossing over $680 million worldwide as it went on to become an even bigger streaming powerhouse on Disney+. Its success has only grown over the years, with the film becoming one of the most re-watched titles on the platform. The announcement of Moana 2 comes as a response to the franchise’s massive fan base and its potential to captivate audiences once again.
It’s worth noting that this sequel is separate from the live-action remake of Moana currently in development, with Dwayne Johnson set to return as the demigod Maui. Auli’i Cravalho, who lent her voice to Moana in the animated film, will not reprise her role in the live-action version but will serve as an executive producer, emphasizing the importance of accurate representation and casting.

With a talented creative team and a beloved cast of characters, Moana 2 is sure to have both kids and adults alike all over the world playing whatever song Maui will sing next on repeat for years to come.
