George R. R. Martin has revealed preparation has already begun on House of the Dragon Season 3 and, in a welcome surprise, even Season 4.
In a new post published on his blog, the author revealed he recently took a trip to the UK where he visited the set of the show and spent some time discussing the roadmap for its third and fourth seasons with showrunner Ryan Condal and his writing team.
Martin wrote that the conversations yielded fruit but the two days they had were not “nearly enough” for the work they had to do on the project. Given both seasons are still several years away, Martin and the team have a lot of time to put together another meeting and polish their ideas for the show.
Martin also touched on House of the Dragon Season 2, which is in production at Leavesden Studios. The show’s first teaser trailer was released a few days ago and Martin declared its Red Keep and Dragonstone sets as the best film sets he has ever seen. He wrote that the sets were “HUGE, stunning, and so damned real that I felt as if I had gone through a time portal to medieval Westeros.
In his post, Martin also revealed that, and this is bound to make fans jealous, he got a preview of Season 2’s first two episodes courtesy of Condal and they were great. He labeled the two episodes as very dark, enough to bring his friend to tears.
In his words, “I thought both episodes were just great. (And they are not even finished yet). Dark, mind you. Very dark. They may make you cry. (I did not cry myself, but one of my friends did). Powerful, emotional, gut-wrenching, heart rending. Just the sort of thing I like.”

Given Martin’s propensity for writing “Powerful, emotional, gut-wrenching, heart rending” and, dare we say, sadistic stories himself, the fact he likes the darkness of the show hardly comes as a surprise. After all, the show is based on the author’s own Fire & Blood novel. And that is besides the original book series – A Song of Ice and Fire, which can equally be described as gut-wrenching and heart rending.
Speaking of the book series, Martin hinted that he’s still working on the highly anticipated sixth installment Winds of Winter, which he has been writing for over a decade. However, since he has been providing updates like this for years without anything to show for it, fans will be hard-pressed to take his words at face value, especially where this particular novel is concerned.
House of the Dragon Season 2 is currently in production and will make landfall on HBO in August 2023.
