The Fantastic Four reboot might have just found its Doctor Doom

If true, Mads Mikkelsen will be the first MCU actor to play two different characters with major roles in separate films.

Amidst talks about Marvel Studios pivoting away from Jonathan Majors and Kang the Conqueror comes news that may sound a lot like it comes straight out of the internet’s fantasies.

Apparently, Mads Mikkelsen, known for his captivating performances in various films including his role as Kaecilius in Doctor Strange, is in discussions with Marvel Studios for the role of Doctor Doom.

Doctor Doom, a character deeply rooted in Marvel Comics lore, has been a subject of much speculation regarding his introduction into the MCU ever since Marvel Studios acquired the rights to the character in 2019. The announcement of a Fantastic Four reboot that same year only fueled this anticipation. Despite the excitement, fans haven’t seen an official portrayal of Doom in the MCU, with previous rumors of his appearance in various movies, such as Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, proving to be unfounded.

Doctor Doom has played the role of multiversal threat in the Marvel Comics, sometimes as a worse villain compared to Kang.

The potential involvement of Mads Mikkelsen in this iconic role adds a new layer of excitement to the MCU’s future as it tries to steer clear of further controversies. Among other roles, Mikkelsen’s portrayal of Kaecilius in Doctor Strange was proof of his ability to embody complex villainous characters, suggesting he could bring a unique depth and intensity to the role of Doctor Doom. However, this has also raised questions, as it’s not common for actors to assume two or more roles in the MCU.

Of course, there’s precedent. Case in point, Gemma Chan has appeared in both Captain Marvel and The Eternals. A key difference, however, is that her role in the former was largely forgettable. On the other hand, Mikkelsen stood out for his performance as Kaecilius in the 2018 film.

The Fantastic Four reboot, directed by Matt Shakman and set for release on May 2, 2025, is generating interest for all the right reasons. With Pedro Pascal all but confirmed to having signed on the dotted line to play Reed Richards, aka Mr. Fantastic, and other casting rumors circulating, the addition of Mads Mikkelsen as Doctor Doom could elevate the project’s profile even further.

Of course, according to the reports, the MCU has only had a meeting with Mads Mikkelsen about the potential role, so don't get your hopes up too high.

The working title for the film, Blue Moon, and its current pre-production status at Pinewood Studios in England, are positive signs that the project, after several delays, is finally making good progress.

Naturally, as the internet’s favourite actor – fans have long wanted Mikkelsen to play either Venom Snake from Metal Gear or Geralt of Rivia from The Witcher – the reactions to Mikkelsen’s potential Doctor Doom casting have been largely positive.

The role of Doctor Doom in the MCU is particularly significant, given the character’s iconic status as one of the most complex and enduring villains in Marvel Comics. His potential to be a central antagonist in future MCU phases, possibly replacing or complementing Jonathan Majors’ Kang, adds to the gravity of casting this character. Mikkelsen’s potential portrayal of Doctor Doom could offer a nuanced, charismatic, and intellectually formidable adversary, qualities that are essential for bringing this complex character to life.

Between Mikkelsen’s Doctor Doom and a “different” kind of Reed Richards, the MCU could be headed towards a much brighter future after fumbling the ball in recent outings.

As the MCU continues to evolve, the casting choices for pivotal characters like Doctor Doom are crucial. The prospect of Mikkelsen stepping into this role is a compelling one, promising to add depth and gravitas to the already rich history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

As we wait for an official confirmation, fans and industry insiders continue to discuss Mikkelsen’s involvement in this iconic role while others throw in different names into the mix.
