It’s official: Blade reboot will be R-rated

Is it really a Blade movie without Blade cursing out a vampire before violently introducing it to his - you guessed it - Blade?

Blade is scheduled to release on February 14, 2025.

The night will have a new savior, and he will not be holding back. Marvel’s Blade is set to return, resurrecting the cult classic with a fresh R-rated vision that will cut deeper into the vampire lore than ever before.

Director Yann Demange, a maestro of the macabre, has been entrusted with bringing the reboot to life. While promoting his new short film, Dammi, in an interview with Deadline, Demange disclosed this decision, stating, “They gave me the R, which is so important.”

This is a major move for the MCU, as it signals a departure from the studio’s traditionally sanitized action sets to the grittier, blood-soaked streets that Blade calls home. In addition to this, Blade will now become the MCU’s second R-rated outing, hot on the heels of Deadpool 3, and fans are here for it.

The original Blade film, a pre-MCU gem starring Wesley Snipes, carved its niche with unapologetic vampire violence and a protagonist who was as charismatic as he was lethal. It’s a legacy that demands respect and a touch of reverence, something the reboot seems poised to deliver. After all, what’s a vampire hunter’s tale without the bite?

Demange, who stepped into the director’s chair amidst a whirlwind of production changes, brings a personal narrative to the fore, one that resonates with themes of alienation and the fight against an encroaching darkness. It’s a fitting parallel for Blade, the half-vampire, half-mortal man torn between two worlds and belonging fully to neither.

However, Demange must take extra caution to remain faithful to the source material and steer clear of the pitfall where so many Hollywood directors tend to make the film all about themselves (seriously, nobody wants that “made for modern audiences” nonsense in Blade).

Somehow, Demange will have to make do with a budget of $100 million or less. Considering Marvel’s previous projects needed almost $200 million or more to get off the ground, we have to wonder how the production team intends to turn Blade into a blockbuster.

Perhaps, though, this smaller budget could be a blessing in disguise, forcing the film to rely more heavily on the strength of its storytelling rather than the dazzle of visual effects, which have long been a pain point in MCU productions.

The original Blade film was produced on a budget of $45 million.

As we count down to Blade’s Valentine’s Day release in 2025, the excitement is apparent, especially now that the film has been revealed to be R-rated. With the magnetic Mahershala Ali stepping into the role of the iconic Daywalker and True Detective’s Nic Pizzolatto being brought on to write the script, every fiber of my being tells me that this reboot will be one to remember.
