Later this year, the much-anticipated second season of “Dr. Death” is set to premiere on Peacock. With the recent unveiling of its release date and a captivating new trailer, the buzz among fans has only intensified.
The sneak peek showcases the central character, Doctor Paolo Macchiarini, portrayed not just as a skilled thoracic surgeon and professor, but also as an enigmatic figure. His profound self-confidence, bordering on narcissism, becomes evident when he boldly states, “The work I do could change the world.”
The trailer also introduces investigative journalist Benita Alexander, who is on the prowl for the truth about Macchiarini and his work. However, she is ensnared by his charm and falls for him.
Dr. Death Season 2’s logline provides more context. It reads:
This season of Dr. Death, based on the Wondery podcast, follows ‘Miracle Man’ Paolo Macchiarini, a charming surgeon renowned for his innovative operations. When investigative journalist Benita Alexander approaches him for a story, the line between personal and professional begins to blur, changing her life forever.
As she learns how far Paolo will go to protect his secrets, a group of doctors halfway across the world make shocking discoveries of their own that call everything about Paolo into question.
Dr. Death retells horrifying medical malpractice cases. The show is inspired by the Wondery-produced podcast with the same name. Where the first season is based on the podcast’s first season, the upcoming installment is based on the podcast’s third season.

Given its status as an anthology series, Dr. Death Season 2 will feature a different cast from that of the first season. The new season stars Edgar Ramirez and Mandy Moore in the lead roles of Macchiarini and Alexander with Jack Davenport, Rita Volk, Judy Reyes, Ashley Madekwe, and Annika Boras playing other characters.
Dr. Death is a show about that very familiar human condition: illness. The first season, released in 2021, made a positive impression on critics and audiences. Given its reception, you would’ve expected Peacock to renew it for a second season immediately. Unfortunately, the show wouldn’t be renewed for another season until one year later. With its impending debut later this year, fans will heave a big sigh of relief that the show is indeed making a return to their screens.
Dr. Death Season 2 is a coup for Peacock. The show will arrive at a time of upheaval for the entertainment industry when there is a dearth of new content due to the dual WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. If Peacock plays its cards right, Dr. Death Season 2 and its recent acquisition of the first three Expendables films, as well as The Matrix films, will help it improve its standings among streaming platforms.
Dr. Death Season 2 will arrive on Peacock on Thursday, December 21. There are eight episodes and they will arrive at the same time, a la Netflix. Alongside this, Peacock will release a documentary with the title Dr. Death: Cutthroat Conman. Like the upcoming show, this documentary will detail Macchiarini’s rise to glory and fame as well as his destruction.
