Henry Cavill officially Netflix’s The Witcher in July at the end of Season 3, likely because of fatigue according to director Marc Jobst. After his departure, work immediately began on the fourth and fifth seasons, with Liam Hemsworth taking up the mantle. Unfortunately, the WGA strike occurred, bringing the show’s development to a halt.

With the strike over, fans will be pleased to know that work on the show has finally resumed. Javier Grillo-Marxuach, a writer on the show, shared this update via his X account a few days ago. The veteran screenwriter posted a picture of himself wearing a Witcher medallion and captioned it with the words, “we’re back, witchers!”

Before the strike began, Netflix had already started working on the new season. The streaming giant even confirmed a fifth season, much to the delight of many fans. So, when the strike ended, work was expected to resume on the show, and Grillo-Marxuach’s words simply confirmed it.

Initially, Netflix had scheduled filming to begin in September, but that plan was disrupted due to the strikes. With the WGA strike now over, the streaming service adjusted its plans and rescheduled filming for season 4 to next year. After a short break following the filming of season 4, production is expected to begin on the fifth season, following Netflix’s original plans. However, these plans are not set in stone as the SAG-AFTRA strike is still ongoing.

If AMPTP and the actors’ guild manage to resolve their differences before the new year, and filming commences as per the new schedule, there is a high chance that The Witcher will return to our screens by 2025. If, on the other hand, the strike prolongs, there is no telling when fans will be able to return to Andrzej Sapkowski’s world of magic and elves.

The Witcher’s producer believes the titular character is in the same league as Batman, Superman, and James Bond. We aren’t quite sure about that, but there’s no denying that the show has been one of Netflix’s biggest draws since the debut of the first season.

By the way, the fan website Redanian Intelligence recently reported that The Witcher Season 5 will be the final one. The streaming giant has yet to give the official word, but this source has a track record for getting insider information right. So, the jury is still out on whether they are accurate this time or if they have received incorrect information.

The world of The Witcher is a vast one and whether it runs for five seasons or six, true fans will never be ready to let it go. If Redanian Intelligence is right, fans would be disappointed, to say the least. Fortunately, Netflix seems willing to flesh out the franchise in the form of spinoffs and prequels. Even though it is only a consolation, it is much better than the alternative, which is a world with no shows about The Witcher.
