It’s been a decade since we last saw the quirky superhero antics of Kick-Ass, but if you’ve been yearning for more masked vigilante action, there’s good news on the horizon. Matthew Vaughn, the director of the original 2010 film, has been dropping hints, and it seems we’re in for a reboot of the franchise.
Vaughn, who’s no stranger to shaking up the superhero genre, recently disclosed at the New York Comic-Con that he’s gearing up to breathe new life into the Kick-Ass universe, with filming slated to begin next year.
Though we’re all attached to the original characters, especially the dynamic duo of Dave Lizewski and Hit-Girl (played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Chloe Grace Moretz, respectively), this reboot will introduce us to a new cast of characters. Regardless, Vaughn teased the possibility of our old favorites making a return in potential sequels.
Back in 2010, Taylor-Johnson was relatively fresh on the Hollywood scene. Fast forward to today, and he’s since become a household name, thanks to standout roles in blockbusters like Avengers: Age of Ultron, Nocturnal Animals and Bullet Train. He’s reportedly even being considered as the next James Bond. But, while that remains uncertain, he’s set to star as the lead character in the Sony Spider-Man Universe’s upcoming film, Kraven the Hunter.
With such a meteoric rise, if Vaughn wants to bring Taylor-Johnson back into the Kick-Ass fold, he might have to pull out all the stops. Given the actor’s current Hollywood stature, it would likely take a compelling storyline (and perhaps a serious paycheck) to lure him back.
The original Kick-Ass film was a game-changer. It was gritty, it was raw, and it turned the superhero genre on its head. The sequel, however, didn’t quite hit the mark for many fans.
Vaughn’s decision to reboot rather than continue might be a way to recapture the magic of the first film. He described the upcoming project as a “tangent” and something “fun,” and knowing Vaughn, these are not empty promises.

While Kick-Ass fans are undoubtedly excited, it’s certainly a busy time for the English filmmaker. Apart from the reboot, he’s also working on Argylle, a star-studded spy comedy that’s set to hit theaters in February next year.
On top of this, he’s also working on the third installment of the Kingsman series. With such a packed schedule, it’ll be interesting to see how Vaughn juggles these projects.
