Can “The Marvels” Recapture Captain Marvel’s Box Office Magic?

The box office projects for the all-female superhero team's first Hollywood outing don't look good at all.

The Marvels is getting its first box office predictions ahead of its release next month. The estimates look bleak which has some fans worried.

It has been an inconsistent year for Marvel Studios so far. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania was a disappointment at the box office while Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 was a huge hit. Marvel certainly wants to end the year on a high note with The Marvels.

Brie Larson’s first solo movie as Captain Marvel was a smashing success, earning over $1.1 billion globally during its theatrical run. The movie was the first female-led superhero film to break the $1 billion barrier at the box office. It was also a huge commercial success for Marvel Studios as the movie only had a relatively average budget of $175 million.

An early box office prediction for The Marvels isn’t looking too good. According to Box Office Pros, the upcoming Marvel movie is projected to earn between $50 to $75 million domestically during its opening weekend. Movie pundits predict that The Marvels will have a total domestic gross earning between $121 to $189 million in the North American box office.

The early box office prediction is a far cry from the estimates for the first Captain Marvel movie. The 2019 film was estimated to earn over $100 million domestically on its opening weekend, with some experts even predicting that the movie could potentially earn $120 million.

Captain Marvel outpaced the estimates, grossing over $150 million during its opening weekend domestically. The film earned a total of over $426 million during its domestic box office run.

The box office predictions for The Marvels is a tad bit worrying. Compared to box office predictions for recent MCU films, The Marvels is at the lower end of the spectrum. Even Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania was predicted to do better in the US domestic box office and was estimated to bring in anywhere from $96 to $120 million. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 was also expected to earn around $120 million from the US box office market.

The Marvels may not be able to replicate the success of Captain Marvel.

Some experts think that The Marvels may gross as much as $750 million, which is already a big achievement for a post-pandemic Marvel movie. It would take all of The Marvels’ superpowers to even come close to the $1 billion mark. The success of the first movie may have more to do with the film debuting between the two Avengers movies than anything else.

If the expert predictions are correct, it would be a massive undertaking for The Marvels to break even. However, with movies like Dune: Part Two being delayed to 2024, The Marvels may be able to capitalize on the lack of tentpole blockbusters.

Hopefully, The Marvels get a positive reception from movie critics. Movie ratings and strong word of mouth can make or break a film’s box office prospects. Ant-Man 3 had a strong opening weekend but attendance wavered over the next few weeks because of poor audience feedback.

The Marvels is coming to theaters on November 10.
