Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson novel series is one of the most popular book franchises in the world. The series has been adapted into multiple media, including video games and feature films. Now, the world of Percy Jackson is about to get bigger with an eight-part television adaptation.
The series, titled Percy Jackson and the Olympians, will arrive on Disney Plus later this year. It will adapt the first book in the series with a second season, based on the second season in the hexalogy, potentially on the way.
A few days ago, the company gave us a glimpse of the adaptation with the release of a new teaser trailer.
As the teaser kicks off, the voice of Percy Jackson, played by Walker Scobell introduces his character. We hear him say, “My name is Percy Jackson. Am I a troubled kid?” The voice answers in the affirmative and then goes on to list a series of challenges that the young demigod is facing, including bullying, bad grades, and his magical heritage.
The trailer shows us snippets of Percy struggling to read because of dyslexia. We also see scenes of him being bullied. However, all these seem to be the least of Percy’s worries as we see him being tackled to the ground by a giant beast.
“You saw something, something that no one else could see?” His mother asked him, unraveling the mystery behind his birth. And so begins a tale that will leave you on the edge of your seat.

Based on the best-selling book series by Rick Riordan. Percy Jackson and the Olympians tells the story of a 12-year-old modern day demigod, who after a series of weird events learns that his father is Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea. After he discovers his demigod heritage, he is shipped off to Camp Half-Blood, escorted by Chiron and his friend Grover to hone his powers.
Alongside the trailer, Disney released a description that gives more insight into the series. It reads, “Percy Jackson & The Olympians tells the fantastical story of a 12-year-old modern demigod, Percy Jackson, who’s just coming to terms with his newfound supernatural powers when the sky god Zeus accuses him of stealing his master lightning bolt. Now Percy must trek across America to find it and restore order to Olympus.”
The adventure-fantasy series is produced by Disney with Riordan serving as a co-writer with Jon Steinberg. James Bobin directs the show, while the three serve as the executive producers with other notable figures like Bert Salke, Jeremy Bell and Riordan’s wife, Rebecca Riordan.
Percy Jackson and the Olympians will arrive on Disney Plus on December 20.
