The horror genre has been on fire this year, and one of the standout titles that had fans gripping their seats has been an unlikely supernatural film, The Boogeyman. Directed by British filmmaker Rob Savage, this big-screen adaptation of the Stephen King short has been the talk of spooky town since its theatrical release. The Boogeyman is making its way to Hulu on October 5, in time for the month-long “Huluween” extravaganza. The Boogeyman chronicles the story of Sadie Harper, portrayed by Sophie Thatcher, and her younger sister Sawyer, played by Vivien Lyra Blair.
Following the tragic death of their mother, the Harper family is distraught with grief, but as if that wasn’t enough, they soon find themselves facing a supernatural entity known as The Boogeyman.
The 20th Century Studio film was initially unveiled back in June 2018, with Scott Beck and Bryan Woods taking the reins as the screenwriters. However, Disney’s acquisition of Fox in 2019 resulted in the project’s cancellation before its revival in November 2021 after Savage was brought on board to direct. Originally intended for a Hulu release, Disney had a change of heart, opting for a theatrical debut after receiving encouraging feedback from test screenings.
King adaptations have seen their fair share of hits and misses over the years, but The Boogeyman stands tall among the best. It doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel; instead, it delivers a blend of raw emotion and pulse-pounding jump scares that’ll have you checking under your bed long after you’ve left the theater.
With a fresh 61% on Rotten Tomatoes and raking in a modest $82 million at the box office against a $35 million budget, it’s clear that this film struck a chord with both critics and audiences alike.
