In compiling a list of the greatest sci-fi films of all time, one would be remiss not to include Edge of Tomorrow. The 2014 film has built a cult following, owing largely to the stellar performances of Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt. Fortunately, in the event of a sequel, Emily Blunt has recently expressed interest in reprising her role.
In an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz before the SAG-AFTRA strike, the Oppenheimer star discussed her thoughts on an Edge of Tomorrow sequel. She excitedly revealed that she is “so ready” for the sequel, clarifying that she was never the “impediment” to the film materializing. She further disclosed that there was indeed a script for a sequel at some point in the past, stating:
There was one that Doug [Liman] kind of slithered over to me. I mean, I would love to make it a reality but I just don’t know when or how. And how many Mission Impossibles does he [Cruise] need. Come on!
Despite taking a playful dig at her co-star, Blunt quickly showered Cruise with compliments for his performance in the film, saying:
Come back to the side where you can be… you know, wasn’t he brilliant [in Edge of Tomorrow]? He was amazing as the cowardly hero… I adored him. He was the best.
Adapted from Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s Japanese light novel All You Need Is Kill, Edge of Tomorrow sees Earth against an unprecedented invasion by a ruthless alien race known as the Mimics. Tom Cruise plays the role of Major William “Bill” Cage, an officer with no combat experience, who finds himself thrust into the frontlines of the battle.
After dying in combat, Cage discovers that he is caught in a time loop that resets every time he dies. With each iteration, he gains combat skills and knowledge from the skilled soldier Rita Vrataski, played by Emily Blunt. Together, they venture on an impossible mission to break the cycle and find a way to turn the tide against the alien invaders.
Plans to make a sequel began back in 2015, when writer Christopher McQuarrie disclosed that Cruise had a concept for a sequel. Shortly afterwards, Liman signed on to direct the film, which would be titled Live Die Repeat and Repeat, with Cruise and Blunt set to reprise their roles. Over the years, Liman consistently provided periodic updates indicating that the sequel was actively being developed, but the project never advanced into production. A TV adaptation was also reported to be in the works last year but it has languished in development hell since then.

Now that Emily Blunt has revealed her desire to bring Rita Vrataski back to life, Tom Cruise is the only missing piece to this puzzle. However, it’s easier said than done, as Tom Cruise has openly stated his intention to continue starring in the Mission Impossible series until he’s 80.
