The debate about who is the best Spider-Man actor has never yielded an outright victor, and rightfully so – all three actors who have taken on the iconic role have been incredible in their own respect. Andrew Garfield, who portrayed the webslinger in The Amazing Spider-Man films, has been out of action for quite some time now, but a recent update from the actor suggests his story is far from over.
In the official art book of Spider-Man: No Way Home, as shared by Twitter user SpiderMan3news, the 39-year-old actor discussed how his Peter Parker found inspiration from the events of the movie, saying:
It’s changed his life. He’s going back knowing that he has brothers. He’s going back in re-inspired to follow his destiny, his calling – the purpose of his life. By catching MJ, he got to make up for a terrible tragedy that he tried to avoid in his world.
Garfield last appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man films in 2014, but his character made a comeback in 2021’s No Way Home, thanks to a tear in the multiverse. Multiple villains from alternate Spider-Man realities appeared in Holland’s universe, but with them came the Spider-Man versions of those universes.
This unexpected turn of events proved to be a blessing in disguise, as Garfield’s Spider-Man ended up rescuing Zendaya’s MJ. Garfield expressed how important his Spider-Man was in this particular scene, asserting:
If he hadn’t been in Peter 1’s [Holland’s] world, then it’s possible MJ may have met the same fate as Gwen. His presence was a purpose presence in that regard. And I think he’s going back with a mind blown about the cosmos and the universe and string theory and multiple dimensionality. He’s going back incredibly reinvigorated.
Fans have been hoping for a sequel to 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and while Sony had plans for not just a third installment but even a fourth film in the series, none of them came to fruition. But not all hope is lost, according to Garfield, who teased the possibility of a third film in the future, stating:
The story never ends, whether we film it or not. There’s a story happening in a universe somewhere. There’s endless potential with this character and all the different iterations. So, yeah, he’s definitely out there doing something.
In 2013, there were concrete plans underway to bring The Amazing Spider-Man 3 to life. Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, and Jeff Pinkner, who had served as the writers for the second film, were all set to return for the threequel, which was scheduled to release in June 2016.
The film would have picked up from the events of the second film, with Peter Parker grappling with the loss of Gwen Stacy. However, after Marvel and Sony reached a deal to bring Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the end of The Amazing Spider-Man films became a foregone conclusion.

Like Batman, Spider-Man is one of the few superhero characters to have received multiple distinct adaptations on screen. The recent animated Spider-Verse films have been a massive hit for Sony, and while Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse’s release is delayed, it seems unlikely that Sony will bring back Garfield’s Spider-Man anytime soon. His best chance of reprising the role now lies in a potential cameo appearance in the MCU.
