Sylvester Stallone is one of the biggest Hollywood action stars in Hollywood history. While he has appeared in innumerable of the industry’s biggest franchises over the years, two of them in particular – the Rambo and Rocky series – cemented his status as a bonafide action star.
With a career that spans half a century, Stallone has a story to tell – one that is worth hearing. And in what has become the norm for the streamer, Netflix is spearheading the project.
On June 30, we got our first-ever peek at the upcoming documentary with a short teaser trailer released to the company’s YouTube page.
Although it’s less than a minute in length the trailer teases a candid Stallone. It opens with a shot of the 76-year-old actor looking on in his characteristic gruff manner. Alongside this shot, we hear him say, “Do I have regrets? Hell yeah, I have regrets.”
Over the next few seconds, we see multiple shots of the actor at different locations and hear him say, “What is healthier? To live under the illusion that you could have been great, or actually have an opportunity to be great and then you blow it and you realize you’re a failure?”
Throughout the trailer, we hear more of Stallone’s baritone voice narrating against a backdrop of footage spanning different eras of his life. Among others, we are treated to footage of the actor at the 1977 Oscar Awards, where Rocky, a film he wrote and starred in, won the award for Best Picture.
The trailer’s documentary reads, “For nearly 50 years Sylvester Stallone has entertained millions with iconic characters and blockbuster franchises, from Rocky to Rambo to The Expendables. This retrospective documentary offers an intimate look at the Oscar-nominated actor-writer-director-producer, paralleling his inspirational underdog story with the indelible characters he has brought to life.”

Even though the trailer is short and only teases the actor’s regrets across his career, we believe it is a sign of things to come. For many people, our regrets are the most vulnerable parts of us and, as a result, the hardest things to talk about.
And if, like the trailer teases, Stallone is willing to be candid about this part of his life, we are almost certain he will be candid about every aspect of his life in the documentary.
Sylvester Stallone is the second action star from the late 20th century to get the documentary treatment from Netflix. The first person is his contemporary and former rival Arnold Schwarzenegger, whose documentary was released on the platform in June.
If Sly toes the same line as that documentary, we expect to see Stallone stripped down to his most basic and share some of the most vulnerable moments in his life.
Sly will arrive on Netflix in November. As for the exact date, Netflix did not provide that detail.
