Craig Mazin doubles down on plans for multiple The Last of Us seasons

According to one of the showrunners of the live-action adaptation of The Last of Us, the show should be "around for a while."

What are the chances that we'll be getting spin-offs of The Last of Us by the next decade?

It appears that audiences will get more of the live-action adaptation of the award-winning Naughty Dog franchise.

Craig Mazin was in Las Vegas on Sunday where he talked about the future of The Last of Us, saying:

Our plan is to do it not just for one more season.

We should be around for a while.

Naughty Dog co-founder and The Last of Us showrunner, Neil Druckmann, previously confirmed, alongside Mazin, that The Last of Us’ next season isn’t going to be the last, and for a good reason.

The Last of Us Part II is a far longer, larger, and more nuanced game compared to the first title in the series. It was also just as controversial as it was critically acclaimed. So, while it’s true that Druckmann and Mazin have plenty of material to draw from, they’ll also need to exercise caution. Audiences have already raised concerns about a particular episode in The Last of Us’ first season and the second season will dive into such topics headfirst.

Ultimately, multiple confirmations are better than none.

Unfortunately, all of this talk about The Last of Us doesn’t change the fact that it won’t be here for a while. The show won’t start filming until later this year and its earliest premiere date is late 2024 but an early 2025 premiere is more likely.

It’s amazing that people are still talking about The Last of Us months after the initial nine-episode run ended.

With that said, we hope the extended period between seasons can change Druckmann’s mind about seemingly giving up on The Last of Us. It’s unclear if Naughty Dog is working on The Last of Us Part III. Some fans hope the studio won’t do it to cater to popular demand. If there isn’t a story to tell, it’s best to leave The Last of Us as is and adapt what already exists for a modern audience. But, something tells us that Druckmann and Mazin is cooking something up for the future of The Last of Us, which could benefit both the live-action adaptation and the video game the former is based on.

Naughty Dog is currently working on a multiplayer spin-off to The Last of Us that could be revealed on September 26, otherwise known as The Last of Us Day.
