Shazam! Fury of the Gods gets digital release date

Warner Bros. Discovery is looking to save face by announcing the streaming release date of the Shazam! sequel while it's still in theaters.

The poor performance of Shazam 2 may have led to the early digital release.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods has had a lackluster box office performance. With ticket sales significantly slowing down, Warner Bros. Discovery has decided to try its luck on digital media.

Warner Bros. has announced the digital release date for Shazam 2 even as the movie is still showing in theaters. The second outing for Zachary Levi’s Shazam is coming to digital platforms on April 7.

Alternatively, fans of the movie can purchase a physical copy of the film later this summer on May 23. Fury of the Gods can be purchased from digital platforms for $24.99. Viewers can opt to rent the movie for two days for $19.99.

Both the digital and physical versions of the film come with plenty of behind-the-scenes featurettes. The cast and crew of the movie give a sneak peek at the making of the film in the featurettes.

Shazam 2 is now available on digital platforms.

Zachary Levi returns as Shazam after the success of the original movie in 2019. DC followed up the lighthearted feel of the original movie with a darker sequel that reflects Billy Batson’s coming of age.

In Fury of the Gods, Billy and his foster siblings adapt to being powerful superheroes and try to fend off the Daughters of Atlas who have a grudge against the wizard that gave them powers. The sequel features more intense fight scenes with the family working together to defeat the legendary villains.

While DC did its best to promote the movie, Shazam 2’s box office performance was pretty bad. The poor showing may have prompted Warner Bros. Discovery to release the film on digital platforms. This is similar to Warner Bros. releasing Black Adam to digital platforms after its lackluster ticket sales.

The poor performance of Shazam has also been linked to the production of Black Adam last year. Levi revealed that DC originally intended for Shazam and Black Adam to face off. Hawkman and Cyclone were dispatched by the Justice Society of America to recruit Shazam to stop Black Adam. The plan was scrapped at the last minute.

Fans have linked the box office failure of Fury of the Gods to Black Adam.

“That was not the original intent,” Levi reveals. “The original intent was to have Hawkman and Cyclone be there inviting me [into the Justice Society]. Walter Hamada, Peter Safran, David Sandberg … we had an awesome scene that would have tied me into the JSA with Hawkman and with Cyclone and we were thwarted.

Shazam may ultimately share the same fate as Black Adam after the poor box-office performance of the sequel. There are currently no projects lined up for Shazam in the rebooted DC Universe.
