DC celebrates as Joker sequel wraps up filming

The unlikely sequel to one of the most successful R-rated films of all time, Joker: Folie à Deux, will hit cinemas in October 2024.

Joker 2 will now go into post-production with over a year before it hits theaters.

Director Todd Phillips is now preparing to start post-production work on Joker: Folie à Deux, now that filming is finished.

Multiple sources confirmed the news on Twitter, including the official DC Comics page. We also got two new official images of Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix as Harley Quinn and the Joker, respectively.

The Joker sequel is scheduled to premiere on October 2024 and chronicles Arthur Fleck’s time in Arkham State Hospital as well as the events that led to his meeting with Dr. Harlene Quinzel.

After initially denying that a Joker sequel would happen, Phoenix was confirmed to star alongside Lady Gaga in Joker: Folie à Deux last year.

The title is a French term that translates to “madness of two”. It’s a fitting subtitle for a film about two kindred souls who meet under the most unlikely circumstances. Make no mistake, Joker 2 isn’t going to be a love story at all but it’s believed that it will be a musical of sorts.

Apparently, the Joker sequel is going to have a musical element.

While Lady Gaga’s involvement as Harley Quinn is widely known, how the film will depart from the traditional depiction of the popular Joker paramour remains unclear.

What is certain is the sky-high expectations fans will have for Joker 2. After premiering in 2019, Joker more than lived up to the bill, pulling in more than a billion at the global box office. Just to put it into context, very few R-rated films make more than $500 million at the global box office. Before Joker came out, only roughly a dozen films that premiered globally had made at least as much. But, Joker not only made $500 million, it also doubled that amount to become the only R-rated film to gross at least a billion worldwide.

Suffice it to say, anything less than a billion dollars will be considered a disappointment by fans and critics alike.

With that said, now that Joker: Folie à Deux has finished filming, we’ll likely get a trailer sooner rather than later.

Joker: Folie à Deux is part of the DC Elseworlds lineup of films under the newly-formed DC Studios banner.
