Marvel announces Stan Lee documentary on Disney+ to commemorate his 100th birthday

The documentary celebrates the life of the famed creator of Marvel Comics.

Stan Lee is best known for creating Marvel Comics. His impact on movies and TV shows has been felt in the last decade or so as Marvel Studios has dominated Hollywood with the slate of films and TV series based on the characters created by the famed comic book writer. So, it’s only natural that we’re getting a documentary in time for what would’ve been his 100th birthday.

To celebrate the birthday of the late Stan Lee, Marvel Entertainment has announced a new documentary. Stan Lee: An Original Documentary celebrates the legacy of Lee and it will showcase the characters he created for Marvel Comics. The documentary’s tagline is “100 years of dreaming. 100 years of creating. 100 years of Stan Lee.”

The documentary will reportedly include some of the movie cameos of Lee. The writer has appeared in numerous Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, often in a humorous fashion. One of the first movies to include Lee was Iron Man where Tony Stark mistakes Lee for Hugh Hefner.

The announcement comes on what would have been Lee’s 100th birthday. The creator of Marvel comics was born on December 28, 1922, in New York City. Lee passed away in 2018 at the age of 95.

Members of the Marvel family along with fans took to social media to celebrate the life of the famed comic book creator. Director James Gunn took also posted a personal tribute to Lee saying, “Happy 100th Birthday to Stan Lee. You are missed, my friend.”

Earlier this month, artist Humberto Ramos created an artwork showcasing Lee among the characters that he created for Marvel Comics. Among the characters featured in the artwork are Spider-Man, Daredevil, The Hulk, The Fantastic Four, X-Men, and the Avengers.

Unknown to many, Stan Lee worked on a series for DC Comics. The Just Imagine project was a series of one-shots for DC characters such as Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and Shazam reinvented and redesigned by Lee.

In celebration of Lee’s 100th birthday, DC will be releasing a 96-page one-shot anthology called Tales from Earth-6: A Celebration of Stan Lee. The comic book will feature ten stories from Lee’s interpretation of the DC Universe characters.

In Just Imagine, Lee reinvented some of the iconic DC superheroes. Batman was reworked as a Black pro-wrestler prior to Jace Fox becoming the caped crusader. Superman had a story where he was a member of the Kryptonian Police Force.

In Lee’s interpretation, Wonder Woman is a Peruvian activist whose powers come from a magical Incan Staff. Green Lantern, on the other hand, gained his powers from the legendary tree Yggdrasil. Lee’s version of The Flash is a woman who gains superspeed after being injected with hummingbird DNA.

Stan Lee: An Original Documentary will be streaming on Disney+ in 2023.
