Avatar: The Last Airbender and its sequel, Avatar: The Legend of Korra, are considered two of the best animated cartoon series to ever come out. The former, in particular, was a huge hit for Nickelodeon and proved that quality animation can come from outside of the usual suspects, specifically, Japan. Although the sequel received criticism for its forward-thinking LGBTQ storyline, fans have slowly warmed up to it in recent years. Nearly a decade after The Legend of Korra ended, it appears that we might finally be able to meet the first post-Korra Avatar.
According to Avatar news, Paramount Pictures and Avatar Studios are currently working on an animated series set “100 years after Korra’s time” with a setting that’s the “Avatar world’s equivalent of our world’s present day.

The same source adds that the new animated series will come out in 2025 with an animated film scheduled to follow after it premieres.

One of the biggest storylines of The Legend of Korra is the beginning of a new Avatar Cycle. The first one lasted for more than ten thousand years until Unalaq, who’s basically the evil Avatar, ripped Raava out of Korra and destroyed her. Korra later started a new Avatar Cycle just right before the end of the Harmonic Convergence when she re-fused with Raava and defeated Unalaq. Thus, it’s a very interesting proposition for a new Avatar, who’s presumed to be from the Earth Kingdom, to take over following the death of Korra.
Of course, this is all speculation. Paramount and Avatar Studios haven’t announced anything yet.
In the meantime, Avatar fans can look forward to watching a live-action adaptation on the popular streaming platform, Netflix. The last we heard is that the first season will consist of eight hour-long episodes. It’s also believed that at least two video games based on The Last Airbender are in development. Finally, it appears that Nickelodeon might have known about James Cameron’s Avatar movie earlier than everyone else.
