After a COVID-extended wait, fans finally got a chance to see Henry Cavill’s Geralt once again in Season 2 of The Witcher back in December. Although the wait was very much worth it, eager fans are hoping that Geralt’s third return won’t take as long. Unfortunately, we don’t know when The Witcher Season 3 is coming, but we do have a behind-the-scenes photo and an official synopsis to prove that the cameras have begun rolling.
According to Netflix, filming on The Witcher 3 has started. The news comes just a week after Cavill posted a photo of himself training with his new horse and a little over two months after the show’s executive producer, Steve Gaub, started looking for suitable locations.
As per the photo’s description, The Witcher is days into its production as it shows the series’ lead stars, Cavill alongside Freya Allan (Ciri) and Anya Chalotra (Yennefer) donning their respective characters’ outfits. Unfortunately, the photo doesn’t tell much about what the trio is doing in a chilly location. But, after reading through the full description, the third season will delve deeper into Ciri’s much-needed magical training.

Netflix’s live-action adaptation of the novel of the same name is much more faithful to the books compared to the video games by CD Projekt RED. Cavill, in particular, is happy about this and he’s previously mentioned how he would like Season 3 to stay loyal to the books. Seeing as it will likely be using The Time of Contempt as its source material, we can expect to see more of Ciri, who is hinted by the novel to be the prophesied child who will destroy the old world and bring in a new era.
Hopefully, Netflix will release The Witcher Season 3 later this year so that we don’t have to keep on guessing. Judging by how the streaming platform prefers to stagger its releases, fans might have to wait until 2023 for Season 3 with The Witcher: Blood Origin set to premiere later this year.
Blood Origin is a six-part live-action prequel that will tell the tale of the first Witcher and the events that paved the way for magical powers to come to The Continent. As far as tiding audiences go, the upcoming miniseries is shaping up to be just as good as the main show.
Speaking of Witcher, CD Projekt RED just confirmed that The Witcher 4 is in development with the game’s new director promising not to get caught up with the industry’s controversial but very prevalent crunch culture.
