Why buy a Steam Deck over a PC or Nintendo Switch

It's hard not to compare the Steam Deck to the Nintendo Switch

Valve was gunning for the Nintendo Switch's unrivaled dominance in the portable gaming console market when it first announced the Steam Deck.

While there are similarities between the Deck and the Switch, they're also very different.

Understanding what makes the Switch different from the Deck is important when deciding which of these two deserves your hard-earned cash.

For now, it appears that the conversation revolves mostly around availability.

Valve is trying its best to keep up with demand, but if you buy a Steam Deck right now, there's no guarantee that you'll get your hands on it earlier than Q3 or even Q4 2022.

Meanwhile, the Nintendo Switch is widely available online and in local retail stores.

Not to mention, while the Deck is a viable emergency desktop alternative and supports thousands of games, it doesn't come close to the native support that Switch titles get from Nintendo.

The point is that the Deck should remain an impossible impulse buy for at least another year.

If you've got the money to buy either now, you might as well get a Switch OLED and save up for when the Deck will land at local retailers in your area.
