Scarlett Johansson lawsuit versus Disney: Everything We Know
By Geoff Borgonia July 30, 2021
Scarlett Johansson, star of Marvel Studios’ Black Widow, has filed a breach of contract lawsuit against Disney.
The suit stems from an apparent breach of contract regarding the release of the Black Widow film through both theaters and the Disney+ streaming service.
Originally intended for a May 1, 2020 release, Disney decided to push the release of Black Widow multiple times due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
As of this writing, Black Widow has earned $319 million at the global box office.
Although the global box office will put Black Widow as one of the lowest performing Marvel Studios films of all time, this should still be considered a financial success.
Scarlet Johansson’s legal team alleged that Disney breached their contract by choosing to release the film in both theaters and on Disney+.
Disney has since disputed the claims of the actress’s lawsuit, stating "There is no merit whatsoever to this filing."
Disney pointed out the potential profit that Johansson will gain from the Premier Access of Black Widow on Disney+ and her $20 million payday.
