Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings: Shang-Chi’s Simu Liu was the only choice
By Geoff Borgonia August 21, 2021
According Marvel, Simu Liu was the only choice for the starring role in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
In 2014, the actor made a Twitter comment about Marvel’s superhero success, but noted the lack of an Asian American hero.
Victoria Alonso: There was never a plan B with him... he was it.
Shang-Chi was created by Steve Englehart and Jim Starlin for Special Marvel Edition #15 (December 1973).
Shang-Chi was created based on the Fu Manchu lore and was envisioned as the heroic estranged son of Fu Manchu.
After Marvel lost the licensing to use the Fu Manchu material, Shang-Chi was revised to have a more mystical origin.
Instead of Fu Manchu or the sorcerer Zheng Zu, his father in the MCU will be Iron Man’s arch-nemesis, The Mandarin.
Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings kicks off its theatrical release on September 3, 2021.
