James Gunn vs. Martin Scorsese opinions on superhero films go viral
By Geoff Borgonia August 9, 2021
The Suicide Squad director James Gunn expressed his contrasting perspective versus Martin Scorsese’s about superhero films as "not cinema".
James Gunn’s retort is in response to Martin Scorsese’s New York Times opinion piece, voicing his disdain for superhero films back in 2019.
Director Martin Scorsese had most of his success through operatic films that focus on organized crime and street-level politics like Netflix’s The Irishman (2019).
Fans of the superhero genre, expressed their displeasure at what amounted to sourgraping of a successful genre that the Scorsese has no interest in.
In an interview with Josh Horowitz for his Happy Sad Confused podcast, Gunn expressed his disagreement with Scrorsese in plain terms.
However, Gunn followed up by clarifying that he means no disrespect to the veteran Scorsese, and expressing his own admiration.
James Gunn has worked on both Marvel and DC superhero properties and disagrees with the idea that they are automatically judged as not cinema.
