James Earl Jones retires as Darth Vader

Actor James Earl Jones signs off as the voice of Darth Vader, after 45 years in the iconic Star Wars role.

The 91-year old actor has voiced Darth Vader since 1977, providing the menacing tone to the Sith Lord in Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope.

The technology has come to a point that actors’ distinctive voices like James Earl Jones has can now be convincingly recreated.

Interestingly, James Earl Jones was not even properly credited in the first two Star Wars movies: A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back.

Jones refused to be credited, feeling he was only providing the equivalent of a sound effect, while David Prowse was the Darth Vader on the screen.

Darth Vader’s voice in the Obi-Wan Kenobi series on Disney+ was created with an A.I. and archived recordings.
