Google shuts down Stadia as the game service did not live up to expectations

The technology behind Stadia was impressive but it was far too ambitious and was backed with a relatively thin library of games to choose from.

As a result, Google is shutting it down just three years after the program was first launched in 2019.

Phil Harrison, GM of Stadia, stated that Google’s approach to the streaming service "was built on a strong technology foundation, it hasn’t gained the traction with users that we expected so we’ve made the difficult decision to begin winding down our Stadia streaming service."

Players who purchased Stadia controllers and games can ask for a refund that should be granted by mid-January.

Players who still have unfinished games can continue to enjoy the streaming service until the servers are shut down in January.

However, Google explains that it will retain the technology it developed for the Stadia and repurpose it for other parts of the company.
