Emma Stone closes deal on Disney's Cruella sequel
By Geoff Borgonia August 15, 2021
After a brief negotiation, Oscar winner Emma Stone has locked a deal with Walt Disney Pictures for a sequel to Cruella.
Disney’s Cruella is a spinoff of the classic animated film 101 Dalmatians from 1961 (as well as the live action remake from 1996).
Disney had recently adopted a hybrid theater + premium video on-demand (PVOD) release model. Cruella was one of the first to use it.
Disney also released Black Widow with this hybrid model. Scarlett Johansson filed a lawsuit that this was a breach of contract.
After Johansson's lawsuit made headlines, industry insiders shared rumors that Emma Stone was "weighing her options".
However, a news report has confirmed that Emma Stone has finalized and closed a deal with Disney for a Cruella sequel.
Given that Stone has inked the deal for the Cruella sequel, it is unlikely she will follow Scarlett Johansson's lawsuit vs. Disney.
Disney’s Cruella will be available free to subscribers of the Disney+ streaming service starting August 27, 2021.
