Warcraft 3: Reforged news is coming soon after going dark in 2021

Most fans thought that Blizzard had abandoned Warcraft 3: Reforged after going radio silent in 2021.

As much as we make so much ado about them, the vast majority of video game remasters are a hit or miss.

It's a shame what Blizzard did to Warcraft 3: Reforged.

For every Mass Effect: Legendary Edition, there are a handful of other attempts at refreshing classic titles that only damaged the legacy of the remastered game. Unfortunately, Warcraft 3: Reforged made it to this list.

After being confirmed at BlizzCon 2018, Blizzard finally released Warcraft 3: Reforged, which updates the graphics and adds several improvements to Warcraft 3: Reign of Chaos and its expansion, The Frozen Throne, in 2020. Unfortunately, the decades-long wait to enjoy the classic RTS titles on modern platforms with better aesthetics just wasn't worth it. Things got so bad for the botched remaster that fans flocked to Metacritic to give it one of the lowest scores of all time.

While Blizzard did attempt to fix what was wrong with Warcraft 3: Reforged for a spell, the development team has since gone dark since dropping a patch in April 2021.

Thankfully, the drought is about to end.

According to Blizzard president, Mike Ybarra, who responded to a fan query regarding Warcraft 3: Reforged, fans should "hear something from [the development team] soon (in June)."

The last we heard about Warcraft 3: Reforged is that Classic Games, the people who worked on the game, had disbanded. If this is true, then we're curious to find out who's working on Warcraft 3: Reforged now, if there is still someone left to maintain the game.

It's sad seeing how Blizzard butchered what could have been an easy way to milk one of its most iconic titles. The 2002 title and its expansion, which came out in 2003, is easily one of the most influential games of all time. The extensive custom game support of Warcraft 3 birthed the MOBA genre and set the stage for World of Warcraft, which remains one of the most popular MMOs on the market today.

Some fans are still hoping that Blizzard will revisit the idea of releasing Warcraft 4.

Having said that, the "June" date is interesting. This either means that Blizzard is part of the upcoming Xbox and Bethesda showcase on June 12 or the Summer Game Fest on June 9.

At the moment, Blizzard is sitting on a handful of upcoming releases. The Overwatch 2 beta ended last May 17. Meanwhile, Diablo Immortal is set to come out on June 2. Finally, Wrath of the Lich King is headed to World of Warcraft Classic sometime later this year.
