CD Projekt RED is working on an Unreal Engine 5 The Witcher Remake

Christmas just came early for The Witcher fans as an Unreal Engine 5 remake of the original game is in the works.

No, your eyes don't deceive you.

As you can see from the original game's graphics, it's in dire need of a modern remake.

After confirming a slew of The Witcher and Cyberpunk-related projects, CDPR has saved the best for the last - it's remaking the original The Witcher in Unreal Engine 5.

CDPR first announced The Witcher Remake under the codename, Canis Majoris. But, this is the first time CDPR has pulled back the curtains on The Witcher Remake. To avoid spreading its resources thin across multiple high-profile projects, CDPR is working with the Polish studio, Fool's Theory, for the remake.

Hopefully, Fool's Theory can do The Witcher Remake justice.

Fool's Theory had previously served as a support studio for People Can Fly on Outriders and Larian Studios on Baldurs Gate 3. In addition to The Witcher Remake, Fool's Theory is also working on Project Vitriol and Seven.

Details about The Witcher Remake are still unclear at the moment, with CDPR saying:

It's still early and we want to ensure that the game is created with the utmost care and attention detail, therefore, while we're excited to share the news with you, we want to ask for patience as it will be a while until we start talking about this project in detail."

The Witcher video game franchise is celebrating its 15th anniversary this year. The Witcher is a classic RPG that came out in 2007 and it definitely hasn't aged well. A full-on remake is going to be great news for those who joined the bandwagon late and couldn't quite push through the first two game's dated graphics and mechanics.

In other news, fans are waiting for the release date of The Witcher 3 on next-gen consoles following the earlier delay. The latest report claims the enhanced version will launch on December 9, but we're still waiting for official confirmation. Also, CDPR is working on The Witcher 4, which won't be out until 2025. Finally, The Witcher prequel series, Blood Origin, will finally premiere on Netflix this December. This should tide audiences over as they wait for Season 3 of The Witcher to arrive next summer.
