The Russo Brothers almost joined Kevin Feige's Star Wars project

The Avengers co-directors were in early talks to join Feige's Lucasfilm project.

Kevin Feige's Star Wars is no longer in active development.

The Russo Brothers made arguably two of the best Marvel Cinematic Universe films of all time. As it turns out, they almost had a chance to do the same for an untitled Star Wars project.

The co-directors are best known for helming the Avengers: Infinity Wars and Endgame movies. They also directed Captain America: Winter Soldier and Civil War. With a resume like this, one can only imagine what they can achieve over at Lucasfilm.

In a recent interview on the "Smartness” podcast, Joe Russo revealed that the duo was in talks about signing on with Marvel president Kevin Feige for a Star Wars movie. The project has been shelved.

"We love Star Wars," Joe Russo said. "Kevin Feige is a huge Star Wars fan, and there were some early conversations about maybe teaming up with Kevin to do 'Star Wars.’"

The Russo Brothers were in early talks to helm the Star Wars project.

Feige announced a Star Wars movie in September 2019. During this time, rumors were going around that Disney planned on replacing Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy with Feige. Marvel’s president has successfully made the franchise one of the most valuable properties in the movie industry.

The rumors were unfounded with Kennedy staying on until today. However, Feige did actually start working on the Star Wars project, even hiring Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness writer Michael Waldon to develop a script.

Waldon confirmed to Variety in May 2022 that he was working on the screenplay for the Star Wars project.

"We’re finally into it in earnest," Waldon shares with Variety. "I mean, I’m writing away. It’s a lot of fun. I’m enjoying having the freedom on that to do something that’s not necessarily a sequel or anything."

Feige later tapped Waldon to write the script for Avengers: Secret Wars. The upcoming movie will conclude the Multiverse Saga and is aiming to reach the level of Endgame in terms of scale. Fans have wondered if the hiring of Waldon would mean for the Star Wars movie.

Doctor Strange 2 writer Michael Waldon worked on the script before the project was shelved.

However, it was reported last month that the Star Wars movie that Feige was developing has been shelved. Feige is busy with all the Marvel projects that are currently in active development for the Multiverse saga.

This is not the first time that a major MCU personality worked on a Star Wars project that hasn’t seen taken off. Patty Jenkins worked on Rogue Squadron but reportedly exited due to creative differences.

The Russo Brothers currently have no active projects with Marvel. They are currently serving as executive producers of the Amazon Prime Video spy series Citadel. The co-directors are working with Chris Pratt and Millie Bobby Brown on the Netflix movie The Electric State which is currently in post-production.
