Fans have been waiting for the Highlander remake ever since it was announced in 2018. While there is uncertainty about Henry Cavill's participation in the film, its director assures audiences that the movie is still happening.
In an interview with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, director Chad Stahelski gave fans a promising update about the upcoming movie, saying that it could be the start of a movie franchise.
"I think we have some very good elements now," the director said. "The trick is when you have the tagline 'there can only be one', you can't just kill everybody the first time."
During the podcast, Stahelski gave fans a preview of what to expect with the Highlander reboot. The director talked extensively about his inspiration for the movie and how the original had an impact on the development of the current project.

There were previous rumors that Cavill is being replaced by Chris Hemsworth in Highlander. In the interview, Horowitz asked if the Witcher and Superman star is still attached to the project. Stahelski responded "yes" to the question and shared his ideas for a franchise.
"I'll say it for you first, our story engages a lot of the same characters and stuff like that," Stahelski revealed. "But we've also brought in elements of all the TV shows, and we're trying to do a bit of a prequel, a setup to The Gathering, so we have room to grow the property."
It is unclear whether Cavill will play the legendary character Connor MacLeod or a new character. Given that Stahelski plans for the first film to be sort of a prequel, it is quite possible for Cavill to play an entirely new character. Several MacLeod characters have been introduced in the Highlander franchise and adding one more wouldn't really be out of the ordinary.
For his part, Cavill is a big Highlander fan. The actor shared that he watched the movies when he was young, which is why he's excited at the opportunity to star in the upcoming film.
"I've been a fan of Highlander since I was a lad," Cavill shared on Instagram when the film was announced. "From the movies in all of their 80s, Queen slathered glory to the TV show with an actor who looked remarkably like one of my brothers. Being not shy with swords, and having a director as talented as Chad Stahelski at the helm, this is an opportunity like no other."
Henry Cavill is currently working on a live-action adaptation of Warhammer 40K with Amazon. He recently vacated his role in the DC Extended Universe as Superman and will be replaced by David Corenswet in the DC Universe.
