Crossplay between platforms is being introduced in Tekken 8, offering console gamers the chance to play against gamers on the PC for the very first time in the game's franchise.
The game's director, Katsuhiro Harada, confirmed this news in a response to a Twitter user. Harada later explained that he attempted to implement crossplay with Tekken 7 as well, saying:
When the previous generation consoles were released, I had already proposed crossplay between the two platformers. However, at that time, they were at odds with each other over their mutual interests (and P2P security issue) and repeatedly refused.
Harada highlighted that while there remain certain unresolved problems, crossplay will definitely be incorporated into Tekken 8.
Remember when they announced they were open to crossplay a few years ago? But in reality, they didn’t actively support third parties at the time, and the hurdles were actually quite high. There are still some problems left, but it will be possible.
In September of last year, Tekken 8, which is the tenth installment in the series, was unveiled during PlayStation's State of Play livestream. Bandai Namco, the game's developer, hosted a 36-minute presentation earlier this year detailing the game's gameplay mechanics. Furthermore, closed alpha tests for the game have already commenced, with the first session taking place from March 31 to April 2 at Evo Japan.
Having sold more than 10 million copies as of December 2022, Tekken 7 was a critical and commercial success. Although no official release date has been announced yet, Tekken 8 will be available to play on the PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via Steam.
