Details for Madame Web have been very scarce despite the movie completing filming months ago. Luckily, one of its stars may have accidentally revealed which character she will be playing in the upcoming film.

In a recent interview with Total Film, Sydney Sweeney revealed that she will portray Spider-Woman in the upcoming movie. This confirms previous rumors that the actor will play Julia Carpenter, the second Spider-Woman in the Spider-Man spin-off. The actress shared that she "couldn't be more excited" and that she "can't wait to be able to talk about it."

Who is Julia Carpenter?

Julia Carpenter gained her spider powers from an experiment done by the secretive government organization called The Commission. Carpenter was told that the experiment was part of an "athletic study." She was then injected with a cocktail composed of spider venom and exotic plants – imbuing her with her superpowers.

Carpenter later took the mantle of Spider-Woman - though not the first to don this hero persona - and was involved in Secret Wars among other Marvel events. She allied herself with the Avengers during the conflict.

Spider-Woman has superhuman levels of strength, speed, stamina, agility, and reflexes similar to Peter Parker’s Spider-Man. Her unique ability is being able to spin webs made of psionic energy. The web can support a 10-ton weight and last for an hour. The psionic web helps her walk on walls and ceilings.

She is also proficient in hand-to-hand combat as she has been trained by The Commission. Spider-Woman also has heightened senses and can detect vibrations on her web. These abilities are roughly on par with those of other Spider-adjacent heroes. 

Sweeney will be joining several other Spider-Women in the upcoming movie. Dakota Johnson will be playing the titular character Madame Web. They will be joined by Isabela Merced as Anya Corazon aka Spider-Girl and Celeste O'Connor as Mattie Franklin aka Spider-Woman. The other one. 

The upcoming movie is being directed by S.J. Clarkson with the script written by Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama. The movie is being produced by Columbia Pictures and Di Bonaventura Pictures with Sony Pictures Releasing taking charge of the distribution.

It will really be interesting to see several Spider-Women in one movie. Hopefully, it won’t be confusing and each character is given enough screen time. If the movie’s plot is well written, it may be the start of a film series for characters.

Madame Web is coming to theaters on February 16, 2024.
