- Modders have already tackled various in-game issues, enhancing graphics, improving the inventory system, and even added celebrities to the space RPG.
Bethesda games are known to be mod-friendly titles and the recently released Starfield is no different. Mods for the space RPG have already accumulated over a million downloads in just the first week of the game - and it doesn't even sport official modding support yet. However, we now know that it soon will.
Starfield game director Todd Howard recently spoke with Famitsu about the game receiving official mod support. According to Howard, Bethesda plans to roll out full mod support next year. He adds that players can do also anything in the game as with previous titles.
"When the mods are ready, you will be able to do almost anything as we have done in the past," Howard shared. "Mods will be supported next year, but we will do it in a big way because we love it too, so we'll go all-in."
Both Fallout 4 and Skyrim had Creation Kits that allowed players to access tools that Bethesda devs use in their games. The kit allows modders to develop advanced mods with greater ease. We expect that Bethesda will also release a Creation Kit for Starfield when the game starts officially supporting mods.
Starfield already has mods for some of the various in-game issues. One of the most popular mods currently available enables DLSS support for Nvidia GPUs. Currently, Starfield officially supports only AMD's FSR upscaling tech due to its partnership with the hardware maker. DLSS support makes the game look better but does not drastically increase framerates.
Another very popular mod in the space RPG drastically improves the shockingly horrible inventory UI in Starfield. M8r98a4f2's StarUI Inventory mod improves the inventory screens for PC players and gives users more information at a glance.
Other mods add aesthetic elements such as character skins and spaceship design. A modder has added George Constanza from the TV series Seinfeld to the game. It's just a bit of modern-day pop culture reference added to the game to lighten the mood.
Hopefully, with official support for mods, the community can add land vehicles to the game. Starfield can sometimes feel like a tedious walking simulator. This is especially bad when a player is encumbered, slowing the walking process significantly which can be frustrating.
Bethesda's Pete Hines previously revealed what kinds of mods Starfield would allow. According to the studio's publishing boss, modders can add their own planets or stories to the game by using mods made by the community.
"When you start to think of the kind of communities that come around Bethesda Games Studios games, and putting a tool like that in the hands of people to go, 'how'd you like to make a planet?'" Hines said. "All of that is going to be off the charts when you start getting a community to come in and add all of the different things that they want to bring to it. Build their own stories they want to tell, whatever it is."
Starfield is available now on PC and Xbox Series X\S.
Well, I will be getting Starfield in 2024 then!
Thank GOD! I was hoping it would be added sooner. This game needs some help from the community.
Assuming this even happens. They could change their minds.
I wonder if they planned on holding off longer but due to the complaints, they are pushing it to come out sooner? It makes no sense to allow mods so quickly on a game like this... Unless they want to bump up PC sales.
