Sony confirms Venom 3 and Ghostbusters: Afterlife sequel

Even though it was pretty much a given, it's nice to know that Sony has acknowledged that Venom 3 is happening.

It appears that Tom Hardy will join Tom Holland and Billy Maguire as the only Spider-Man characters to get a third solo cinematic outing.

It will be interesting to see Hardy's anti-hero interact with the other denizens of Sony's Spider-Man Universe by the time it arrives.

Sony Pictures showed a highlight reel of all its upcoming projects at its recent CinemaCon panel. One of the films included in the showcase was Venom 3. Sony did not reveal anything else outside of confirming that the film exists, but we are pretty sure that Hardy is coming back to reprise his popular role with Andy Serkis possibly signing on once again to helm the project.

Sony's plans for its Spider-Man universe are off to a good if critically panned start. After two Venom outings, the latter of which received negative critical reviews but earned over $500 million at the global box office, Sony's first non-Venom feature film debuted a few weeks ago with Morbius. Just like Venom, critics did not like the Jared Leto-led movie. However, audiences had other ideas as it pulled in $156.6 million by the time its theatrical run ended.

Venom 3 is most likely still a ways away. In the meantime, Sony will dabble with and explore other characters. At the moment, Sony has two live-action comic book adaptations set for next year: Aaron Taylor-Johnson's Kraven the Hunter and Dakota Johnson's Madame Web. In addition, Sony will release Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse in 2023 as well with the second part coming in 2024.

With so many others lined up until Venom 3 comes out, we're hoping that Sony finds a worthy script and plot that gives Sony's Spider-Man Universe a hit with both critics and audiences alike.

In the weeks following Venom 2's premiere as well as Spider-Man: No Way Home, there were talks that Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man will crossover with Hardy's Venom for the threequel. Of course, both Sony and the MCU will have to jump through a lot of hoops to make that happen.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife grossed over 0 million at the global box office.

Venom isn't the only film that's getting a sequel. Sony is picking up 2021's Ghostbusters reboot, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, for another go as well.
