A second State of Play for 2023 may be happening soon.

We have been hearing talks of an upcoming PlayStation State of Play for some time now. A new rumor suggests that a Sony games showcase may finally be happening.

The new information comes from Giant Bomb reporter and gaming insider Jeff Grubb. The leaker has a reliable track record of accurately predicting upcoming gaming events. The upcoming State of Play will reportedly address the recent increase in PlayStation Plus subscription prices.

"I've heard a State of Play is coming, and this feels like a lead-in for that," Grubb tweeted. The gaming insider responded to a tweet about the price increase hinting that Sony may tackle the reason behind the hike in monthly subscription rates.

Sony recently announced a price hike for all three tiers of its PlayStation Plus subscription service. The annual cost of the Premium tier jumped by a massive $40. The new pricing scheme will take effect on September 6 for new subscribers and upon renewal for existing ones.

The price increase hasn't sat well with gamers on the platform. Players lament the increase in subscription prices for PlayStation Plus and streaming platforms like Netflix and Disney+. Xbox also recently increased its subscription rates for the Xbox Game Pass.

An upcoming State of Play may soothe gamers on the Sony platform. Having new game announcements may also be a good way to soften the blow of the price increase. Gamers are probably ready to hear what is in store for the platform beyond the high-profile releases like Marvel's Spider-Man 2, Alan Wake, and Assassin's Creed: Mirage.

The recent price increase for the PlayStation Plus subscription service may be touched on in the showcase event.

The State of Play may have been timed to happen close to the highly anticipated release of Starfield on PC and Xbox Series X/S. Players on the Sony console may feel left out that the Bethesda space exploration RPG isn't coming to the PlayStation. An exciting and loaded State of Play showcase may cheer up gamers on the platform. Having game announcements and release date reveals may soften the blow of Starfield's exclusivity to Microsoft platforms.

Sony may also showcase the PlayStation Portal at the upcoming event. A tech demo or deep dive for the PS5 handheld companion could be on the table at the event given that the upcoming device is expected to release soon. Getting more information on the device and its capabilities could increase interest in the PlayStation Portal.

The rumor did not indicate what gamers are to be expected at the upcoming event.
