SEGA Genesis Mini 2 is coming to Amazon

The SEGA Genesis Mini 2 is coming to North America as a pre-order exclusive through Amazon. The retro console will arrive in October.

After the 2019 release of the original SEGA Genesis Mini, this October 2022 will see the release of the SEGA Genesis Mini 2.

The first SEGA Genesis Mini addressed the disappointing SEGA Genesis Flashback HD console from 2017. That earlier console by AtGames was intended to take advantage of the highly successful NES Classic Edition and SNES Classic Edition releases. However, it failed to deliver due to technical issues. The SEGA Genesis Mini retro console received more favorable fan feedback and sales in 2019.

The games for the SEGA Genesis Mini 2

The first SEGA Genesis Mini was based on the Model 1 of the console. The SEGA Genesis Mini 2 will be physically similar to the later Model 2.

The first SEGA Genesis Mini had 42 games packed in its flash drive. The SEGA Genesis Mini 2 will be upping that number to 50. The official SEGA Genesis Mini 2 site has revealed the following games so far, which includes SEGA CD and new ports from other consoles (as noted below):

  • After Burner 2 (SEGA)
  • Alien Soldier (SEGA)
  • Bonanza Brothers (SEGA, U.S. Gold)
  • Fantasy Zone (SEGA, Sunsoft) – Note that this was originally a SEGA Master System title.
  • Lightening Force - (SEGA, Technosoft) – AKA Thunder Force IV outside North America
  • Mansion of Hidden Souls (SEGA, Tokai Communications) – SEGA CD title
  • Night Striker (SEGA, Taito)- SEGA CD title
  • Ninja Warriors (Sega, Taito)- SEGA CD title
  • Out Run (SEGA) – Also often stylized as OutRun
  • OutRunners (SEGA, SEGA AM1)
  • Rainbow Islands Extra (SEGA, Taito)
  • Rolling Thunder 2 (Namco)
  • Shining Force CD (Sega CD) - SEGA CD title
  • Shining in the Darkness (SEGA)
  • Silpheed (SEGA, Game Arts, Sierra Entertainment)- SEGA CD title
  • Sonic 3D Blast (SEGA, SegaSoft)
  • Sonic CD (SEGA) SEGA CD title
  • Splatterhouse 2 (SEGA, Namco)
  • Star Mobile (Hudson Soft) – Originally a PC Engine title
  • Super Hang-On (SEGA)
  • The Ooze (SEGA)
  • Vectorman 2 (SEGA, BlueSky Software)
  • Virtua Racing (SEGA)

Other titles that are supposed to be included in the North American release but have yet to be officially announced (as of this date) include Columns III, Popful Mail, and Starblade.

With the announced total games for the SEGA Genesis Mini 2 being 50, there are about 20 games yet to be confirmed. It is possible that more titles that were initially released in the SEGA Genesis Mini 1 might be returning (including Shining Force II, which was missing from the NA and Japan release, but included in Taiwan/Korean release). SEGA has also mentioned a bonus game:

…a never-released bonus game has also been added, contributing to a vast collection of games with endless play time!

Will there be more of the best SEGA Genesis games of all time included in the final list? We will have to wait and see in a later update.

Other details

Aside from the games themselves, the SEGA Genesis Mini 2 will include the following:

Genesis Mini 2 Console, 1 wired control pad, USB power adapter, power cable, and an HDMI cable. The console itself measures 4.7 inches wide (120.8 mm) and 1.3 inches (32.3 mm) high, with a length of 4.6 inches (116.5 mm). Meanwhile, the controller is 5.5 inches wide (140 mm), with a height of 2.8 inches (70 mm), and length 1.1 inches (29 mm). The controller cable is 6.6 feet long.

The SEGA Genesis Mini 2 will include bonus games never released on the Genesis, such as Fantasy Zone and Star Mobile.

The console design is heavily based on the SEGA Genesis Model 2, with the cartridge port at the center (instead of to the side) and minus the familiar 16-bit logo. The controller will thankfully be the 6-button configuration, which was the only way to comfortably play fighting games like Street Fighter II on the SEGA Genesis/Megadrive.

Options to connect the Genesis Mini 2 Console to your TV will be through HDMI jack or a USB jack (USB Micro-B). The Video output will be 480p to 720p. This might put off some consumers, as this will likely lead to some distortion and stretching issues with current HD TV standards.

Availability and price

The SEGA Genesis Mini 2 will be available for standard orders and shipping to the United States and Japan on October 27, 2022. But the retro console can be pre-ordered right now through the official Amazon listing.

Currently, the SEGA Genesis Mini 2 is priced at US $103.80, with a shipping fee of $21.99. This high shipping fee is due to the fact that the unit will be delivered directly from SEGA of Japan.
