Ryan Reynolds questions the need for Free Guy 2

The actor reveals there is potential for a second movie but is unsure that making a sequel is the right move.

Free Guy 2 is almost certain at this point. However, actor Ryan Reynolds gives a cautious update about the upcoming film, questioning whether the movie needs a sequel in the first place.

The new statement from Reynolds may be disappointing for fans of the first film.

Free Guy premiered in 2021 after being delayed by the global pandemic. The movie was a critical and commercial success despite being released amid a worldwide health crisis. With the success of the first film, Disney has green-lit a sequel, with reports that the script is already being made.

Reynolds, who plays the NPC Guy in the film, says there is "potential to do a sequel" but questions the need to do a second movie.

"There is the potential to do a sequel to ‘Free Guy,’ which would be fun... I would love it," the actor said in an interview with Variety. "But also like, does everything f***ing have to be a sequel? I don’t know. Sometimes it’s OK to just do a movie and have it kick ass and then everyone goes home."

Reynolds adds, "So you know, there’s a bit of a push and pull there, resisting the urge to just immediately say, ‘Ohh, doing a sequel will validate the first one...No, the first movie validates the first one and then you can leave it at that. So I don’t know, we’re still talking about it."

This new update from the movie’s star comes as a surprise. 20th Century Studio president Steve Asbell confirmed last year that the script for Free Guy 2 is almost complete. According to Asbell, the sequel has "a fantastic story."

Director Shawn Levy later said that he would move forward with Free Guy 2 only if the movie surpassed the original. Levy is steadfast in his belief that the sequel should be great so as not to mess with the legacy of the first film.

While it may be disappointing for fans of the movie to hear this update from Reynolds, he may have a valid point. Free Guy ended on a high note with the protagonists and other NPCs from Free City moving to an independent open-world game called Free Life. Millie (Jodie Comer) and Keys (Joe Keery) rekindle their real-world love story at the conclusion of the film.

Free Guy ended on a high note so it will be risky to add more to the story.

Admittedly, the risks of making Free Guy 2 may outweigh the benefit considering the critical success of the first film. The second film is going to be judged based on how it measured up to the original above all else.

Will fans be seeing Free Guy 2 in production soon? We may know the answer once Reynolds and Levy wrap up the filming of Deadpool 3 which is slated for release in November 2024.
