Jon Bernthal's The Punisher is right up there alongside Charlie Cox's Daredevil and Vincent D'Onofrio's Kingpin as one of the most popular actor-character pairings to come out from Netflix's now-defunct Marvel TV shows. After Marvel picked up the Defenders Saga on top of confirming a new Daredevil series, fans wondered if they'll bring Bernthal back too. And, it appeared that this was finally going to happen for a while.
The Ahsoka actor, Rosario Dawson, was at the Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo where she let it slip that John Bernthal is also part of MCU's plans going forward.
Here's what Dawson had to say about a potential Bernthal return as The Punisher:
I found out yesterday that The Punisher was happening again so I feel like it's my second chance. It's the only one of the shows that I wasn't in and I love Jon Bernthal so let's all make it happen collectively, guys.
Before crossing over to the Star Wars universe, Dawson was in the Defenders Saga as Claire Temple. She debuted in Daredevil as the nightshift nurse responsible for treating Daredevil and his injuries from fighting crime at Hell's Kitchen. Dawson would reprise her role later on in other Marvel shows such as Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, Luke Cage, and The Defenders. Even if a Punisher reboot could still technically join Phase 6 as a late addition after Marvel's Phase 5 reveal, Dawson might have been acting on false pretenses.

After her statement went viral, Dawson on Twitter to clarify things. According to Dawson, Jon Bernthal's return as The Punisher in the MCU, either as part of an upcoming show or in a solo series, is not even a thing at all.
I can’t be trusted…!
Getting intel from fans during signings is iffy apparently.
My bad.
I get excited.

It's a shame that Disney is taking this long to think about bringing back Jon Bernthal as The Punisher in the MCU. His return could happen even if it's just a teaser as soon as next year in Marvel's Echo series, where Charlie Cox and Vincent D'Onofrio are both expected to appear as Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk, respectively. The Punisher has also been a part of several iterations of Thunderbolts, which is becoming a reality as the final film in Phase 5 of the MCU.
For now, fans will have to wait and see if Frank Castle returns to the big screen or small screen.
