In January, news broke out that Justin Roiland, co-creator of the famous adult animated sitcom, Rick and Morty, was facing felony charges for domestic battery and false imprisonment.

Following the report, Rick and Morty’s network, Adult Swim, cut ties with the producer, citing the charges as the reason. A few days following Adult Swim’s decision, Hulu also released him from the television series Koala Man and Solar Opposites that he was engaged in.
In a new development, the writer and animator is now a free man as the Orange County District Attorney’s office has dropped its charges against him. Kimberly Edds, the spokeswoman for the DA’s office, revealed in a statement addressing the development, "We dismissed the charges today as a result of having insufficient evidence to prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt."
Although she refused to reveal them, Kimberly also claimed that the decision came after "additional information came to light."
Although news of Roiland’s charges only came to light this January, the charges were laid against him in 2020 for the alleged abuse and false imprisonment of an unnamed ex. He pleaded not guilty to the charges when they first came, had a pre-trial hearing in court this January, and was set for another pre-trial hearing in April.

Following the dismissal, Roiland released a statement via his Twitter account where he expressed his appreciation for the dismissal. He revealed that he was shaken at the lies reported against him and expressed his disappointment that "so many people were so quick to judge without knowing the facts, based solely on the word of an embittered ex trying to bypass due process and have me ‘canceled.’"
The 43-year-old ended his statement by expressing that he is determined "to move forward and focus both on my creative projects and restoring my good name."
Roiland is one of the brains that created Rick and Morty along with Dan Harmon. In addition to his role as co-creator, he voiced both of the titular characters Rick and Morty. For Hulu, he served as executive producer and also voiced characters in Koala Man and Solar Opposites. Following his dismissal, the streamer announced it would recast his role for both shows and continue without his involvement.
It's uncertain whether Adult Swim and Hulu will take the producer back. Neither has commented on this development.
