Portal writers confident in "pretty awesome starting point" for Portal 3

This is the closest we've gotten to news of Portal 3 being potentially made in a little over a decade.

It looks like Valve might finally get over its allergy to threequels. According to Erik Wolpaw, the writer of both Portal games, there's already a "pretty awesome starting point" for Portal 3 in place if Valve is willing to give it the greenlight.

Portal 1 and 2 set a pretty high bar but if everybody is on board, we're pretty sure Portal 3 can meet if not exceed expectations.

Speaking to DidYouKnowGaming, Wolpaw revealed that he and fellow Portal 2 writer, Jay Pinkerton, had come already come up with a few ideas for Portal 3. Although he did clarify that there's not a concrete script or anything, they do have a starting point that they "like a ton". Wolpaw also added that an "actual idea" for Portal 3 doesn't mean it will happen. In his words, there's "a lot left to do" to make Portal 3 happen, which includes finding people at Valve committed to working on it.

This isn't the first time Wolpaw talked about Portal 3. Earlier this year, Wolpaw lobbied for Portal 3, saying he'd like for the game to happen before he gets too old.

Wolpaw's interviews offer valuable insight into the inner workings of Valve. In the same interviews, Wolpaw explained how there's a difference between having an idea for a game and "actually committing to making a game". Wolpaw also clarified that Valve isn't just "a bunch of people sitting around sipping gin and tonics by a pool" and that "everybody's working".

Valve is in a unique position as a video game company. Despite being worth billions, it still remains private. This means that it's not beholden to keeping shareholders happy. Despite that, Valve is responsible for some of the most influential games in history, such as Counter-Strike, Half-Life, Portal, Team Fortress, Dota 2, and more.

While Valve is free to do what it wants, we're hoping Valve will delight its fans with highly anticipated new installments in its award-winning games like Half-Life and Portal.

If it happens, Portal 3 will be the first official threequel by Valve.

The last we heard, Valve is working on a secret VR headset and a spin-off to Dota 2. Also, if you and your PC are up for it, Portal with RTX is launching on December 8.
