Gran Turismo 7 came out to roaring reviews last year and recently received a new update to support the upcoming PSVR2. While Polyphony Digital is working on updates for GT7, the studio has teased that a team is already developing the next entry into the series.

Gran Turismo series creator Kazunori Yamauchi sat down with the Japanese gaming website Game Watch (translated by Push Square) to discuss the upcoming PSVR2 update for GT7. Yamauchi revealed during the interview that the next title for the Gran Turismo franchise is already being developed by Polyphony Digital, however, he cannot talk about it in detail.
"Actually, we do have a theme," Yamauchi stated when asked about what he wants to achieve with the series. "We are starting to work on the next one, but I can't talk about it yet. It's a shame that I can't talk about it very much."
It would be safe to assume that the studio is still in the earliest stages of pre-production at this point considering that GT7 launched just eleven months ago. However, it is not very surprising for the studio to be working on the next entry as the development of Gran Turismo titles typically lasts for several years. The gap between the release of Gran Turismo Sport and Gran Turismo 7 was five years.
Polyphony Digital usually releases two titles for every PlayStation console generation. The most recent pair is Gran Turismo Sport and Gran Turismo 7. It would make sense that the studio would make another title exclusive to the PS5 and release it towards the end of the current-gen console’s life cycle when the technology has matured enough for the studio to maximize the hardware’s capabilities.
But, while it may be a while before the next Gran Turismo game is out, this year is huge for the series with the release of the aforementioned PSVR2 update and the upcoming Gran Turismo movie.
Series' fans will also see Gran Turismo come to life as the feature film. The upcoming movie is based on the true story of Gran Turismo player Jann Mardenborough who became a professional racing driver after winning the GT Academy racing competition. Gran Turismo is coming to theaters on August 11.
Perhaps, most important of all, players can look forward to Gran Turismo 7's first anniversary on March 4.
