Pokemon Sword & Shield Starter Pokemon Guide

In Pokemon games, the player is handed a starter Pokemon first before they can expand their stable by catching other Pokemon. The Champion of Lagar, Leon, provides the player a starter Pokemon in Pokemon Sword & Shield. Players must then choose among Grookey, Scorbunny, and Sobble as their starter Pokemon.

In Pokemon Sword & Shield, none of the starter Pokemon and their evolution are found in the wild. Instead, you should ask other players to trade one of these Pokemon to you if you want a different starter Pokemon (and their evolutions) besides the starter Pokemon you chose.

Choosing Grookey as a starter Pokemon

Grookey – The Grass Pokemon Starter

How To Get Starter Pokemon Gigantamax?

Max Soup mission

Gigantamax Forms of Pokemon change the appearance of the Pokemon. Such Pokemon also gain access to the special G-Max Move. Only select Pokemon can have the Gigantamax Form.

Gigantamax Forms of most Pokemon in Sword & Shield are obtained by catching them in Max Raid Battles. However, with starter Pokemon final Evolution - Inteleon, Rilaboom, and Cinderace - feeding them Max Soup is the only way.

In order to unlock these Gigantax Forms, you must purchase the game's Expansion Pass, in order to access The Isle of Armor expansion first.

Dojo master Mustard will give you a task to find Max Mushrooms, after completing the second trial. Max Mushrooms are the main ingredient of Max Soup and you need three Max Mushrooms in order to cook the soup.

The locations of Max Mushrooms are Courageous Cavern, Brawler's Cave, Forest of Focus, and Warm-up Tunnel areas on the Isle of Armor. These Max Mushroom only appear in these locations every time you complete Three Max Raid battles. Prepare a Max Soup and feed it to your starter Pokemon and it will have its Gigantamax Form.
